The Weekly Hotseat
Wednesday, 7 October 2026 · Issue #15
This week's Hotseat recap: what came up, what landed, what we're each holding each other accountable for doing next.
Community Update
This week in the room
With a few regulars out sick or double-booked, this week's Hotseat was a small one, so it came down to just three of us. Fewer people, longer thoughts, and a conversation that was able to unpack a fair amount more.
The main theme of the conversation was focus. How to choose a direction and hold steady to it, where AI belongs as a thinking partner without taking the wheel, and why the people worth working with often want the just output, not the lesson.
Key learnings and discussion points
What came up this week
Finding your lane, getting the permission you need and going where the money already is.
Direction beats motion every time.
Nik came in honest: the three-month content plan is still in the works. So we parked the plan for the moment and went deeper. What is he building, and who is it for?
●Pick an anchor offering first: Everything else - the side skills, the range, the lived experience, will hang off that anchor and make it stronger.
Ikigai (the Japanese concept meaning "purpose in life") can be relevant here :
Sometimes you need a permission slip.
The practical tool I brought with me this week was a free leadership-archetype quiz my mentor sent me. It takes about 15 minutes and it reads quite differently from the usual personality tests in that it names what kind of leader you actually are.
Mine came back with three archetypes scored equally: inspirer, coach, and orchestrator. And it made something click for me.
I've been doing the coaching work for ages, sitting on discovery calls, guiding people for free, without once giving myself the title. The quiz didn't tell me anything new. It just gave me the permission I needed to claim the title.
That's the value of a tool like this. Not a revelation, but a benchmark. A potential measure of who you are right now, where your energy comes from, and where you may like to build from. It can also steady the drift; that pull to chase every shiny thing instead of staying with what already works to your strengths and passions.
The market wants the output, not the lesson.
The most practical thread of the day, and the one I keep watching prove itself: stop selling the concept of AI, and start selling the skills.
We talked through a shift away from chasing other solo founders and toward high-value service businesses: law firms, accountancy practices, property agents. People with money already on the table and processes crying out for automation, who have no time or desire to learn the tech themselves.
●Done-for-you beats teach-yourself: This month alone I earned more from building two Claude skills for a law firm, a design-system skill and a proposal writer trained on their own past proposals, than from most of my other work.
●The offer almost writes itself: A quick round of market research done by your AI, then a personalised pitch to local businesses - here's what I know about your industry, here's where you're losing time, here's what I can automate and sell to you as plug and play skills.
