The Weekly Hotseat

Wednesday, 19 August 2026  ·  Issue #8

This week's Hotseat recap: what came up, what landed, what we're each holding each other accountable for doing next.

Community Update

This week in the room

Honesty arrived quicker among the smaller group this week. I came in a bit frayed after finding out my main client won't be continuing next month. The room showed up for me like it does for all members - calm, steady, supportive, with just a bit of humour to get us through.

The theme of the evening seemed to be resistance, with most of us sitting on something we've promised to make and haven't made yet. So we picked apart the why, and landed on the small structural changes that could make the making easier.

Key learnings and discussion points

What came up this week

Resistance, camera nerves, and the small systems that make showing up repeatedly a little easier.

Camera shyness is quietened by preparation, not confidence.

Almost everyone admitted to hating being on camera, even those who seem at ease. Those most hesitant weren't short on courage, but preparation. Nerves might not disappear... friction, however, can dissipate because readiness is manufactured, not felt.

Being realistic we agreed this meant picking platforms and formats that fit our discomfort rather than forcing ones that don't.

For example:

Filming hands and products instead of face to camera videos.

Choosing text or image based platforms when video isn't the medium you’re comfortable with.

Treating first attempts as rehearsals nobody has to see.

Removing barriers to entry in the creation process could look like:

Prepping the space so starting requires only one action, instead of multiple.

Have a running order so you don’t feel overwhelmed by the blank page or endless possibilities.

AI didn't just help me make a reel, it wrote the ideal script FOR me.

I asked Claude to research the psychology of what makes a reel do well online, then built that into a library that writes the script for me. It tells me what to film and how to edit it. It is still requires effort on my part, but it removes a huge part of the mental load.

Two tips to keep the content creation part sustainable:

Batch filming: This way the prep/setup only has to happen once in a while.

Build a content backlog: Before publishing, bank some content so that when you do start posting you can hit a steady flow.

Community and evergreen beats the algorithm.

The most reliable growth isn't rented from fickle, algorithmic platforms, it's built through partnerships, referrals and evergreen places where your work keeps being found.

The same logic shows up in the community-building conversation. Personal outreach re-engages people in a way that no broadcast post ever will. Investing in relationships beats renting a feed long term.

The anchor content engine: record once, cut into clips, feed a recall library, distribute across channels.

This week's resources & community

Needs & Leads

Reels script writer: I built an AI-powered script writer that turns reel psychology into a ready-to-film script. Find it on GoKollab.

Skyler Network, a community-owned platform: A free space to build community without an algorithm deciding who gets seen. Still a little buggy, but definitely under-used, which makes it a real visibility opportunity. Check it out here.

An editor worth knowing: For anyone struggling with the bottleneck between edit and finished product, ready to post, drop me a message. I can recommend a great video editor who also happens to be very well priced.

Got something to offer or something you're looking for?
Post it in the Needs & Leads channel in the community and it'll get a spot in next week's newsletter.

Accountability

What we're each doing in the next week or two

Dirk: Finishing one colour set of plush balls.
Margaret: Recording a fresh landing-page walkthrough to replace the outdated one on her community site.
Nik: Getting his YouTube show out of prep and into recording.
Cands Consolidating my services onto one website.
